Healthy Tips for Mahe Ramadhan

  • Consult a Doctor before fasting- if you have a health condition or are taking medication, you need to speak with your healthcare provider about the safety of fasting.
  • Plan your meals- your meals should be planned ahead to ensure you are getting the right number of nutrients and hydration.
  • Drink plenty of water- Drink water slowly and regularly between Iftar and Suhoor. It is important not to have excessive amounts at Iftar. Try making a mix of fresh blended smoothies. A mix of watermelon, ice and water; simple and hydrating. Do not drink carbonated drinks when breaking fast as it can damage the kidneys. During the evening, avoid drinking tea, coffee and fizzy drinks. When visiting friends and family ask for water
  • Your food intake should be simple- your diet should not differ too much from your normal diet. Try to limit the amount of sugary foods and instead replace them with healthier sources of carbohydrate in your diet. E.g Wholegrains, fruits, vegetables, and lower fat dairy products. Protein also provides you with energy and reduce hunger. Eggs, yoghurts, chia seeds, soy etc
  • Do not overeat. This month is about self control, let us try and develop this habit during the 30 days.
  • Suhoor meal- Your pre-dawn meal should be wholesome and moderate that is filling and provides enough energy for many hours. Wholegrain or whole-wheat options of carbohydrates or low GI foods. Swap cornflakes with porridge, white bread with multi grain or multi seeded bread.
  • FIBRE– is essential to keep you fuller for longer. Oats, lentils fruits and vegetables including raspberries, apple, broccoli have fibre.
  • Foods to avoid- Deep fried foods (Pakoras, samosas…) which can make you lazy and feel heavy, high-sugar foods (gulab jamun, rasgulla…), high-fat cooked foods (parathas, oily curries…). These can cause heartburn or indigestion.
  • Healthy alternatives- baked samosas, baked or grilled meat and milk- based puddings.
  • Go easy- Gentle exercise such as walking is good. However, do not overexert yourself.
  • Stay cool – during the hottest part of the day, stay in cool areas and rest.
  • Dessert- serve your family, friends and yourself ‘dessert’ of fresh fruit.

The aim of this Holy Month is a time to reflect on our habits and actions. It is a time to adopt good habits and developing better ones. Try and achieve some balance in your meals. Aim to cook at home and reduce eating out. This may also help your spiritual level. We must feed our body the right foods as a healthy body leads to a healthy mind, helping our worship. Let s try and aim to motivate one another to healthier lifestyle. A small change can go a long way for achieving a long term impact and seeing benefits.
